Hawksbill Turtle, Barbados
Several species of morning swimmers—human tourists, protected turtles, assorted fish—share the azure waters of Paynes Bay. Boat operators here feed fish-strip breakfasts to about 15 young hawksbill and green turtles.

Mosaic Jellyfish

mosaic jellyfish floats serenely in the waters of the Coral Sea, about 100 nautical miles from Cairns, Australia. Jellyfish are ubiquitous in the Earth’s oceans. They can thrive in warm water and cold, along coastlines or out in the deep. Their bodies are about 95 percent water. And though they have no brains, jellyfish have somehow been smart enough to survive for over 500 million years.

Alaska King Crab

Underneath the ice, spikes meet spikes as an Alaska king crab the size of a nickel crawls over a knobby sea star. After a dozen years, the crustacean will grow to the size of a tractor tire.

Great White Shark

Great white sharks may well be the planet’s most extensive travelers, roaming many thousands of miles each year. Only in the past decade has tracking technology revealed that great whites, solitary travelers, make transoceanic journeys, possibly for breeding.

Sting Ray, Key West

I was on the grass flats just offshore in Key West Florida and I found myself with sharks and rays swimming close to my small boat. They stayed with me for a few minutes and then meandered away.
